Speaker:

Dr. G:

2

:

All right, back to interviewing an OG.

3

:

Previously speaking about large volume,

large scale, cases, here's Shalimar Oliver

4

:

talking about the puppy mill pipeline.

5

:

Welcome back.

6

:

Shalimar Oliver: Hey, G.

7

:

Dr. G:

8

:

So how about, I mean, if anybody

wants to hear about your extensive

9

:

history, they can go back to that

other episode, but just a quick

10

:

recap of what it is that you do.

11

:

Shalimar Oliver: Um, I am one of our

case managers in animal crimes and

12

:

investigations, so we work with local,

state, federal, all the authorities all

13

:

over the country, and we want to support

them with their animal cruelty cases.

14

:

So...

15

:

Dr. G:

16

:

So your discussion today was

something that I have had multiple

17

:

episodes on- Yeah ... because as

you well know, I hate puppy mills.

18

:

And unfortunately, Ohio is way up there.

19

:

Shalimar Oliver: Yeah, you are.

20

:

Sorry.

21

:

Dr. G:

22

:

I know, right?

23

:

Shalimar Oliver: Such a shame.

24

:

Dr. G:

25

:

So let's start first with basics.

26

:

What is considered a puppy mill?

27

:

Shalimar Oliver: Uh, you think

of quantity over quality.

28

:

So you've got a mass ton of dogs that

are in the pet trade, then they're being

29

:

bred solely for the purpose of being

in the pet trade and to make money.

30

:

Uh, and then those dogs themselves

are obviously living in pretty squalid

31

:

conditions 'cause there's too many

for people to ca- take care of.

32

:

Dr. G:

33

:

And the, the pipeline basically is

just, uh, descriptive of the, from

34

:

point A to point, well, Z, I guess.

35

:

Mm-hmm.

36

:

So what, what is it that, what

do these go- dogs go through?

37

:

Shalimar Oliver: Yeah, I mean, they start,

as, as you can tell, like, they're the

38

:

adults that are in these facilities.

39

:

Um, and they have their litter of puppies.

40

:

Those puppies are weaned often too

early, and they're put through these

41

:

transports, uh, either to brokers,

to pet stores, what have you.

42

:

Uh, and being removed from their

mother too early at that age,

43

:

they're so immunocompromised that

by the time to- they get to where

44

:

they're going, they're sick.

45

:

Sometimes they're, they're dying, and this

is what gets reported to us, and so we

46

:

have to figure out how to work with local

investigative agencies to tackle them.

47

:

Dr. G:

48

:

Obviously, it's a real big issue, a

problem for the dogs, but it's also

49

:

a problem for the consumer, right?

50

:

Shalimar Oliver: Mm, 100%, yep.

51

:

Dr. G:

52

:

So how...

53

:

Are there any, any laws or any

resources or any ways that a consumer

54

:

can file a complaint or do something

if they end up with one of these dogs?

55

:

Shalimar Oliver: Yeah, uh, certainly.

56

:

We have, uh, a puppy buyer complaint

form on our website at humaneworld.org.

57

:

So it makes it easier for people, they

don't know what they're doing, they

58

:

don't know what to do, where to go.

59

:

We can help and work with them and guide

them on where they need to report given

60

:

their con- their, their situation, 'cause

every situ- situation is different.

61

:

Um, and so we might refer them

to a Department of Agriculture,

62

:

we could def- refer them to

an attorney general's office.

63

:

It's gonna depend.

64

:

And we, that, in, in that time, we

wanna figure out, well, wait, is

65

:

there also an issue that needs to be

brought to law enforcement's attention?

66

:

And that's where we come in to

share that information and offer

67

:

them the help to do these cases.

68

:

Dr. G:

69

:

If anybody in the audience wants to

learn more about puppy mills, what

70

:

they can do, how they can avoid,

what resources should they look into?

71

:

Shalimar Oliver: Oh, humaneworld.org.

72

:

We have an entire incredible team that

solely works on puppy mill-related issues.

73

:

And so in our website, there's

a puppy mill drop-down, and

74

:

you can go into that section.

75

:

They've got statistics,

facts, information nationwide.

76

:

Um, you can pick your state

and find relevant information.

77

:

You can see, uh, you know, different

research that's been done, statistics that

78

:

have been collected, uh, signs to look

for, how to find a responsible breeder.

79

:

'Cause people don't know.

80

:

They just, they want that puppy,

and they don't realize what's behind

81

:

those closed doors and what's,

what can inevitably happen, uh, and

82

:

they get that sick or dead puppy.

83

:

Dr. G:

84

:

Excellent.

85

:

Well, thank you so much for the

presentation, and as always, thank

86

:

you for everything that you do.

87

:

Shalimar Oliver: Love you, G.
